Unpacking Te Whāriki

Over this course of Unpacking Te Whāriki, we're going to take Aotearoa New Zealand's early childhood curriculum off the shelf and really look at it. Not as a document to be compliant with, but as a living whāriki, a woven mat, that we make together for and with our tamariki and their whānau.

About the course

Wherever you're starting from, this course is designed to deepen how you read it and how you live it.

We begin with the whāriki metaphor and the vision for children, and the bicultural foundation that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te ao Māori. From there we unpack the four principles one at a time, then the five strands, their goals, and the twenty learning outcomes: looking at the knowledge, skills, attitudes and dispositions they describe, and working theories. Then we turn to practice: guidance for kaiako, the underpinning theories, our responsibilities, assessment, planning and evaluation, and pathways to school. We finish by bringing it all together with reflection questions you can take straight back to your team.

This course is for kaiako, leaders and student teachers across every licensed service (centre-based education and care, home-based, and kindergarten) and for whānau who want to understand what the curriculum is asking of us.
